ruby taylor

Ruby Taylor is the face of Brighton-based Yumi And The Weather. She has built up a strong name for herself in industry- crediting her success to grassroots music opportunities across the South of the UK. Ruby has been working on a new album over the first lockdown, with an EP ready to release and an upcoming tour ahead to promote the 2nd album.

COVID-19 hasn't stopped Ruby, as she continues to create and perform music through live streams and socially distanced shows when permitted.

Katy is a 21 year old student studying a Bachelor of Music degree at Birmingham University. Originally from Cornwall, Katy's band Sriracha People have had to face the obstacles of the pandemic when performing as a group- as its members are dotted across the UK.

Since March, the band have been looking for ways to perform in the future, as they work on some original songs- straying away from being a cover-band. Katy is due to graduate in 2021 and her future career relies on the stability of the grassroots music industry.

dan sullivan

Dan is the owner of The Four Horsemen pub in Bournemouth town centre. This well established grassroots venue has prided itself on its community ethos for six years though were not eligible for the Culture Recovery fund. The venue has struggled through the pandemic so far but only time will tell if they can survive it. Dan only took the venue on a year ago and so was not in the qualifying bracket for the fund. Whilst he continues to support grassroots artists, COVID restrictions have made this very difficult.

Matt is the South-West Co-ordinator for the Music Venue Trust. A music venue owner himself, Matt has acted as guide to other struggling grassroots venue owners to help them navigate their way through funding and staying afloat in such unprecedented times. He has worked closely with The Four Horsemen in Bournemouth. Matt spoke to me about the continual efforts of the trust to keep grassroots music venues across the UK, financially secure until the pandemic ends.

Check out his venue: The Exchange, Bristol.
